August 1, 2004 – Looking after store in the new age

by John Costello - Voice & Data

Managing the data we store in IT systems is becoming as complex as the data itself. Adding to the problem is the increasing tendency for most organisations to hold on to all the data that comes into their possession. There is also a trend for legislatures worldwide to mandate organisations to retain more data - down to email messages and digital recordings of phone calls to and from the organisation. John Costello cuts through the complexity and illustrates what is happening in data storage systems.

José Goldmann is principal of SLI-Consulting, an independent consultancy specialising in data storage. "Gartner Group reports that more than 80 per cent of corporate data is never accessed again after being stored for more than seven days," he says. "Placing this data on a corporate storage platform is not only inefficient it is very costly. Organisations need to match their storage needs with their business needs for maximum efficiency in data storage." More

February 06, 2004 - To Have and to Hold

An article written by Sue Bushell for the CIO Magazine

How does an enterprise deal gracefully and effectively with such unwieldy mountains of information?

According to Jose Goldmann, principal of Australian data storage consultancy SLI-Consulting, the best counterattack a CIO can launch is to initiate a storage differentiation plan. He says under such a plan the organisation might have an enterprise-class infrastructure used for mission-critical environments where data can be retrieved within two to four hours, a second tier used to address the storage needs of the business-critical environment where data can be retrieved within 24 hours, and another tier for all the rest.
