SLI-Consulting announces new storage products that blend fibre channel technology with cost-competitive ATA

1st September, 2003- Sydney - SLI-Consulting Pty. Limited, a wholly Australian-owned data storage specialist announces the release of two new enclosures.

The StorageNetwork XA24 (SN-4200-SATA) and StorageNetwork XA24-JBD enclosures bring near-line storage to the next generation.

Targeted at customers with large data storage demands, the new products are ideally suited for near-line solution where cost, reliability and performance are paramount. Bandwidth customers in the oil & gas, imaging and archiving industries, as well as entertainment and mail applications, can now maximise storage efficiency and allocation, while protecting mission critical data.

According to SLI-Consulting’s Principal IT&T Consultant, José Goldmann, the release of these products is timely as demand for data storage is exploding. “New technology requirements are generating demand for unprecedented capacity growth. The need to deliver low costing capacity storage for less money, but still provide enterprise quality performance and reliability, has never been greater.

“The new StorageNetwork enclosures address the near line storage requirements for enterprises with open system implementation that handles vast amounts of data. The products are set to replace/supplement autoloaders and tape libraries in most vertical markets such as digital video, geophysical/satellite imaging, e-mail archival, data record access, mid/long-term data retention and primary disk back-up.

“The StorageNetwork XA24 and StorageNetwork XA24-JBD have been designed to meet the needs of today’s business critical applications and take advantage of low cost commodity IDE drives and drive-size to reshape to reshape the definition of near line storage
“The investment for the array is less than US$ 3 per GigaByte – greatly undercutting the value of tape-based solutions with similar throughput.
“In addition, the enclosures require a small footprint and feature fast data access and the lowest investment point for high capacity storage access,” Mr. Goldmann said.

Shipping with Parallel-ATA drive and upgradeable to native Serial-ATA drive during Q4 2003, the StorageNetwork XA24 and StorageNetwork XA24-JBD offer over 41 TB in a single floor tile with an industry leading density of 159 TB/m³. SATA is the first disk technology to compete head to head with the cost of tape automation. A single or dual 2 Gb Fibre Channel front-end allows for easy integration into existing FC infrastructure and allows for full SAN support.

Built around StorageNetworks' existing SN-1600 product family of enclosures, the StorageNetwork XA24 and StorageNetwork XA24-JBD enclosures incorporate the same rigidity, backplane, electrical and cooling technology as our Enterprise class full Fibre solution. All components are hot-pluggable, including the 16 drives, and reliability is further enhanced card, allowing for support of dual pathing on each drive.

This near line open system network storage solution offers Fibre Channel (FC) to Serial ATA (SATA and PATA) interconnectivity with industry leading Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). The high-density 16-bay 3U RAID array sustains up to 380 MB per second, scales from 240 GB up to 41 TB and includes single or dual redundant RAID controllers (up to 2 GB of total cache). The Dual or quad ported 2 GB FC host connectivity, allows for redundant paths to the storage ensuring data access and high-speed SAN connectivity.
